Kim Jong Un on Monday warned the United States that he has a "nuclear button" on his desk ready for use if North Korea is threatened, but offered an olive branch to South Korea, saying he was "open to dialogue" with Seoul.
After a year dominated by fiery rhetoric and escalating tensions over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, Kim used his televised New Year's Day speech to call for lower military tensions on the Korean peninsula and improved ties with the South.
When it comes to North-South relations, we should lower the military tensions on the Korean Peninsula to create a peaceful environment," Kim said. "Both the North and the South should make efforts."
Kim said he will consider sending a delegation to the Winter Olympics Games to be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February.
"North Korea's participation in the Winter Games will be a good opportunity to show unity of the people and we wish the Games will be a success. Officials from the two Koreas may urgently meet to discuss the possibility," Kim said.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said North Korea's participation will ensure safety of the Pyeongchang Olympics and proposed last month that Seoul and Washington postpone large military drills that the North denounces as a rehearsal for war until after the Games.
A spokesperson for Moon's office said they were still reviewing Kim's New Year's Day speech.
Rather than encouraging U.S. measures that "threaten the security and peace of the Korean peninsula," Seoul should instead respond to overtures from the North, Kim said.
North Korea tested intercontinental ballistic missiles and conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September in defiance of international warnings and sanctions, raising fears of a new conflict on the Korean peninsula.
After testing what Pyongyang said was its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), capable of delivering a warhead to anywhere in the continental United States, at the end of November, Kim declared his nuclear force complete.
He continued that theme in his New Year's address, announcing that North Korea would focus on "mass producing nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles for operational deployment" in the coming year.
This, Kim said, made it impossible for the United States to start a war against North Korea.
"The entire United States is within range of our nuclear weapons, and a nuclear button is always on my desk. This is reality, not a threat," he said, while emphasising that "these weapons will be used only if our security is threatened."
As by reporters to comment on Kim's speech, U.S. President Donald Trump simply said "we'll see, we'll see", as he walked into New Year's eve celebration at Mar-a-Lago, his elite resort in Florida.
The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Kim's New Year's address.

UW officials gave Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin and his team access to UW’s facilities and meeting rooms for as long as they needed.
“I think the way it came about was pretty neat,” UW coach Paul Chryst said Friday. “I know Coach Alvarez and I had talked and what's the right thing to do and how can you make it as good as you can for them.”
UW’s roster at the time included nine players from Florida, so Chryst understood the anxiety his players were feeling. He could only imagine the emotions members of the Florida Atlantic program were experiencing.
“I think any time you're around other people and you get a chance to learn,” Chryst said, “you're appreciative of what you've got. It was just college kids being good to other college kids. It was pretty cool.”

Richt was aware of the treatment Florida Atlantic’s team received in Madison because Kiffin raved about the experience after the Owls eventually returned home.
“Obviously, opening all their facilities to Florida Atlantic was awesome,” Richt said, “and I'm sure they were prepared to house them as long as they had to before they could get back in town.”
Big catch, big misunderstanding: UW officials earlier this week posted on Twitter a picture of several players with a 450-pound hammerhead shark caught off the coast Tuesday night.
Several people labeled the players’ behavior as shameful and/or embarrassing and noted that catching hammerhead sharks, an endangered species, in Florida waters is illegal.
According to a UW official, the charter captain took the boat outside Florida waters, into federal waters. That meant the act of catching the shark was not illegal.
A UW official also noted the players had no idea what they caught until it was in the boat. Because it was dark, the captain didn’t know immediately, either.
The shark was tagged and released.
Dixon honored: UW redshirt junior safety D'Cota Dixon on Friday was named the winner of the Football Writers Association of America's 2017 Courage Award.
The award is given annually to a player, coach or support person in college football who displays courage, on or off the field.
The award was created by ESPN The Magazine senior writer Gene Wojciechowski, a member of the FWAA. A select group of writers from the FWAA vote on the winner each year.
The requirements for nomination include displaying some sort of courageous act, on or off the field including, overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster and living through a lifetime of hardships.
UW fans should be familiar with Dixon's touching story.
The 2016 winner was Pittsburgh tailback James Conner, who overcame Hodgkin lymphoma.

New year Resolution

“Self-improvement” is a tricky framework for resolutions. We take the phrase for granted, but what is it really saying? That changing a lifestyle habit improves your very self? That implies moral value to your choices, labeling some habits intrinsically “good” and others “bad.” This ends up at the idea that your lifestyle choices affect your inherent worth and value as a person. But these habits don’t have moral value. And they don’t determine is your worth as a human being.

So as we go into the new year, resolutions a’blazing, here’s a challenge: Can you make a resolution without moralizing? Is it possible to want to change yourself without believing that pre-change you is bad? (Will you still want to follow through on your resolution if you accept the fact that it won’t make you a better person?)

Instead of labeling a change as fundamentally good, figure out the practical benefit. This will, first of all, help inspire you to stick with the change, even if it’s difficult. But it will also soften the blow when you almost inevitably slip up. A person who eats Cheetos isn’t morally inferior to a person who snacks on carrot sticks, they just live different lives.

If you can’t figure out the practical benefit of a resolution you want to make, that’s a signal to step back and think about if your resolution is really valuable to you. Weight loss is a common culprit here—we’re so trained to think that we need to be thinner that we often don’t think about why. (Which means we often feel like we ought to be thinner when… maybe it doesn’t matter.) And when we moralize what should be neutral personal lifestyle choices, we put our self-worth on the chopping block.

Bad habits already make you feel bad with their negative effects—the stomach ache from junk food, your smoker’s cough, overdraft anxiety, whatever it is. You don’t have to make them referenda on your worth as a person at the same time.

J.T. Barrett might have been Ohio State’s most underrated *and* overrated QB ever

Friday’s bowl games included two beautiful turnarounds, a hideous battle of Wildcats, and Barrett’s 44th win at Ohio State.

Cotton Bowl: Ohio State 24, USC 7

College football fans are never quite going to agree on J.T. Barrett. He might simultaneously be the most underrated and overrated quarterback in Ohio State history.

Barrett’s career numbers are unassailable:

Over four seasons, he threw for 9,434 yards and rushed for 3,263 yards. That’s very nearly a 2,500/1,000 average despite a late-season injury in 2014 and a QB platoon situation in 2015. He also threw for 104 touchdowns and rushed for 43 more.

Friday, he passed Purdue’s Drew Brees for the Big Ten’s career total offense record.

In the 50 games he played, Ohio State went 44-6. It’s almost impossible to do better than that.

Also:

He threw three picks in a 35-21 loss to Virginia Tech in 2014 that nearly derailed Ohio State’s eventual national title plans.

He was 9-for-16 for 46 yards in an upset loss to Michigan State in 2015 that didderail the Buckeyes’ hopes of repeating.

He threw for 127 yards and two picks in an embarrassing 31-0 loss to Clemson in the 2016 CFP semifinals.

He threw four picks in OSU’s 55-24 loss to Iowa this past November, which was, because of its magnitude, one of the most baffling losses in recent college football history.

He was Meyer’s security blanket — when in doubt, call a zone read or ask J.T. to make a big play — but even as one of Barrett’s bigger advocates, I’m not going to forecast a Buckeye drop-off next year in his absence.

With Barrett behind center, Meyer developed an almost Woody Hayesian tendency to close up shop and lean on defense and special teams to close out tight wins. And to be sure, it worked far more often than it didn’t. But it opened the door for a few catastrophic Saturdays, and Barrett’s legacy will forever be complicated because of it.

Still. 44-6. And the 44th win played out like many others. Against USC, Barrett scored twice, on a one-yard keeper and a beautiful 28-yard explosion up the left side of the defense. Ohio State went up 24-0 in the second quarter thanks to a series of Trojan turnovers, and since the Buckeye offense didn’t need to do a damn thing in the second half, the Buckeye offense indeed didn’t do a damn thing. They averaged 5.9 yards per play in the first half while establishing their lead; second half: 3.9.

That wasn’t Barrett’s fault, though. He was excellent in putting the game away early, and he wasn’t asked to do any more than that. If USC hadn’t managed to score only seven points in six scoring opportunities, he would have been asked to do more, and he’d have probably pulled it off just fine.

Barrett’s QB counterpart, USC’s Sam Darnold, wasn’t as lucky. His go-to receiver, Deontay Burnett, committed an early fumble and suffered a drive-killing drop soon after. And lord knows his offensive line couldn’t even pretend to keep Ohio State’s pass rush off of him. He was sacked eight times in 53 pass attempts, and there wasn’t much he could have done about most of those.

At the same time, all of Darnold’s bad habits were on display, too. He threw a gift-wrapped pick six to turn a 10-0 deficit into a 17-0 game killer. He was stripped on two of those sacks because he wasn’t trying to protect the ball. And when he hesitates or double-clutches before throwing, he throws some of the most spectacular air-mail passes you’ll see. Darnold could benefit from returning to USC for another season, but he’s a likely top-10 pick if he leaves. That usually means you leave.
